The history of ashura that’ll make all muslims cry
Ashura is a festival of Shia Muslims that is observed to pay tribute to Husayn’s sacrifice in Karbala. There are two groups of Muslims called Sunni and Shia. The Sunni Muslims only follow Prophet Muhammad’s close companion Abu Bakkar and his successors. Again the Shia follows Prophet Muhammad’s cousin Hazrat Ali and his successors. There was a devastating war between the third imam and Ummaya Caliphate. In this war, Husayn was killed by Yazid on the 10th day of Muharram. This tragic story still makes many Muslims cry on the Ashura holiday.
History Of Ashura In Islam
After Prophet Muhammad died in 632 A.D, a group of Muslims called Sunni decided to select Abu Bakkar as their caliph. But another group of Muslims called Shia didn’t want the same. They believed that their Caliph would be the successor of Hazrat Ali and his children. At that time the entire Umayyad Calipath was ruled by a caliph named Yazid. When Ali’s second son became the third imam of Ummayad, it created conflict between the imam and caliph. The Yazid at that time was a very powerful ruler. So, he called Husayn to his kingdom on the day of Ashura 680 A.D.
Yazid asked Imam to be obedient and show respect to his caliphate. But Imam Husayn refused to pay respect to his words as he was knowing about the illegal ruling of Yazid. His refusal made Yazid very angry and it hurt his ego too. He immediately announced war with Husayn which is called the battle of Karbala. This is the most tragedic war in the history of Islam. In this war, Yazid has a vast army whereas Imam had to war with his family, relatives, and companions. Before the final war began, the soldiers of Ummayad surrounded the imam and his followers.
Husayn and his men completed their prayer of Fajr on the day of Ashura. All his soldiers cope with him to finish the war. They had no fear of death even if they knew that they would die in the war of Karbala. The battle started as soon as Yazid’s men attacked them. It was noon when the desert turned into a dead town. Imam was really socked to lose the life of his soldiers in the war. But he didn’t lose his strength and kept on fighting against his enemy. Losing all his companions, Husayn became alone. They had no supply of food and water which makes many Muslims still cry.
Husayn and his companions were feeling a thirst for water. They were also losing their energy for food insecurity. A deep cry was seen on imam Husayn’s face. But he didn’t lose his confidence and fought till the end of his lifeline. On the last moment of the day of asura, Yazid attacked Husayn from all sides with his army. It was really difficult for him to save his life as he was attacked by many. Still, he tried to fight against Yazid and nearly evening he was killed. His bloody dead body fell to the ground of Karbala. The desert got soundless while only the horse’s clop was heard.
Ashura meaning becomes fruitful when it is remembered by Muslims around the world. The Shia Muslims of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan still observe this on the 10th Muharram. They cry and flagellate themselves with a chain to regret that they had lost their Imam in the war of Karbala. On this occasion, the Shia Muslim followers bleed their backs to show their grief to Allah. This is an Islamic myth that Shia community followers do as worship.
