There are some myths that seem as real and mermaid is one of them. It was a fictional thought of greek with half fish and half woman. The upper body part of a human girl and fish tail in stead of legs. It was also pronounced as “Siren” in European folklore . But “Atargatis” is claimed as the first mermaid in the history of Assyria 1000 BC. In greek mythology, some mermaid stories seem like real. But scientifically they are just psychological creation of human.

Mermaids are perfect in stories, poems and arts. But they have no existence in real as per science. Scientists had research in the deep ocean to find out the secret. They prefer logic in their works than magic. So, they can’t claim mermaid as real until they get its fossils. It is said that three forth of this surface is covered by water. Only 30% water was researched well. But it still needs to research the rest 70%. Thus we can ensure its fake or the mermaid stories were real.
1. Atargatis Goddess
A goddess in greek was called Atargatis who used to live in Assyria (At present northern Syria). It was believed that she was formed from spume of ocean. She had a temple near the ocean where she worshipped. The temple is currently situated at northeast of Aeppo. The beautiful goddess had a lover named Hadad. He was imagined as mortal spirit with whom the goddess had affair. Both of them had deep love for each other. But unfortunately, one day she killed her lover (Hadad) by mistake. This made her emotional and she tried to suicide. Soon she dived into water for dying. The water couldn’t hide her beauty and she formed of a mermaid than she died. The ancient greek believe that she was the first mermaid. In most of the folklores where mermaid stories are found is started with this goddess mermaid.
2. Mesopotamian Mermaid
Mesopotamia is the most ancient civilization in Greece. It was situated in the middle of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Greek people had a lot of mermaid stories targeting these rivers. Most of the merchants on that time used to travel by river. A story of a real mermaid took place beside the river. A group of merchants came to bank of the river Euphrates. They thought of spending the night there. On midnight a merchant woke up from sleep. He heard screaming of a girl coming from the bank of the river. He wanted to go there to help the lady. But suddenly his friend stopped him and said, “Don’t go there or you will be killed” Hearing this, he got astonished and he asked his friend the reason why he was saying such a cruel word. Then his friend explained that the girl had been a mermaid. They are very wild in the deep water and kill people by sinking.
3. Thessaloniki Of Macedon
Thessaloniki was stepsister of alexander from his father King Fillip (359-336BC). Both of them were caring for each other. One day alexander the great asked her sister to bring water of immortality. From this folk, many versions were represented in mermaid stories. In one version it was said that her sister went to bring immortal water. One the way she drank the water to become immortal. When alexander knew about it, he got angry on her stepsister. He cursed her sister and it made her like a mermaid. In another version, she went to bring the water for king alexander. By mistake she drank the water and transformed into a mermaid. In another version, she brought the water but king offered it to her. When she drank the water she became a mermaid.
4. European Folklore
European folklore is also known as western folklore. The ancient greek were the founder of this folklore. They used to believe in spiritual things. Mermaid stories took place in their heart and mind since then. They discovered a new form of mermaid called “Siren”. As per European folklore, these sirens were evil mermaids. They used to kill people diving in the sea. They had enchanting singing voice that attracted sailors. When sailors went to closer to the mermaids, they destroyed their ships and killed them. It was imagined that they were having wild teeth like devils. They bite people with their sharp teeth or dive them into deep sea. This folklore was believed by many fishermen who used to catch fishes in the deep ocean at night. This folklore story was represented in the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides”
5. World War II
During second world war which held from 1939-1945. The war was took place between Europe and other countries. Through this war a miracle mermaid story took place. Japanese soldiers were waiting for the attack of American soldiers. They were waiting near Atlantic ocean. It was a moon lit night. Two army soldiers were walking beside the sea beach. They were waiting for the ship of enemies that might come from the sea shore. Suddenly a soldier noticed that a girl is sitting on the beach stone. The light of the moon fall on her and she was looking like a human girl. Then the first soldier showed it to another. Both of them became astonished seeing this. Then both of them walked to that girl. As soon as they reached near beach stone, it jumped into water and disappeared. The soldiers remained stopped for a while. They thought that it was a psychological attack. A few minutes later, they understood that it was a mermaid. They had quick concept on it because they heard mermaid stories the Europeans.
6. King Alexander
Once alexander imported immortal water for her sister. He used it to wash her sister’s hair for her long lifetime. When alexander died, it made her sister highly depressed. She jumped into sea for suicide purpose but unfortunately she transformed into a giant mermaid. The reason was related to the term of using that immortal water. Then her sister became the queen of the ocean. She was still searching her brother. Whenever she had found a ship in sea, she stopped it. Then she asked the sailors of the boat if they had seen his brother king Alexander. If the sailors answered negative, the mermaid then became wild in anger. She killed the sailors diving the ship in the deep ocean. But if she got positive reply, she became happy and let the sailors go. Among others mermaid stories, the story of this mermaid makes us realize about EGO of alexander’s sister.
